The
Global Education Club
|
1997-1998 |
This
year the club began late in the year because there were contract disputes, and
voluntary services were withdrawn. We were all very glad to start up the Global
Club again, and accomplished a lot!
For Anti-Racism Day on March 21 we:
handed out posters and stickers, free from the Federal Government, in French and English.
had an essay/ poster contest with the Ft. McMurray Multicultural Association.
club members did their annual face painting, and collected the racist and rude comments people made through the day.
taped up a comment sheet in the staff washrooms asking them to explain times they had been discriminated against. Very interesting!
For Earth Day on April 22, we:
passed around a school petition for the continuation of local paper recycling that was in threat.
asked students to finish the sentence, "If I were a drop of water..." and displayed the thoughts
had a school wide clean-up of the schoolyard,
recited the Earth Pledge after Oh Canada
had garbage-less lunches

Kitty Cochrane's class sent bears around the world via people who passed
them along as they travelled.
They all arrived back in May with many stories and souvenirs!
Other events:
donated $28 to Canadian Nature Federation and $28 to World Wildlife Fund Canada through the sale of carnations on Mother's Day
collected and donated 60 pairs of used eyeglasses to needing eyes in other countries
Six members attended the Child Labour Conference at Thickwood School
$17 was donated to Amnesty International through sale of chocolate suckers on Father's Day.
collected 500 items for Food Bank World Food Day
gave 75 books to Santa’s Anonymous
donated $80 in proceeds from a Used Book Sale to Oxfam for Hurricane Mitch Relief
